Kakinada: Geotube wall to prevent sea erosion breached

Kakinada: The geotube wall, constructed along the seashore over 2.5 km near Uppada to prevent sea erosion has been breached in six places due to high waves caused by storm surges ahead of Cyclone Phethai making landfall on Monday. Rough seas were reported along the Kakinada and Uppada sea coasts.
Revenue and police officials stopped traffic on the Kakinada-Uppada beach road due to the cyclone and rough sea after the breach of the geotube wall.
Coconut and other trees have fallen down in Uppalaguptam mandal of the Konaseema area and there is no power in five villages.
Cargo handling at Kakinada’s deepwater port and anchorage port have been suspended and ships anchored in safe places.
The East Godavari administration rescued two fishing boats and 13 fishermen. Seven fishermen of Parlopet in Kakinada had ventured into the sea on December 11 and were stranded while returning home. They rang the call centre and alerted officials who informed the Coast Guard who traced the boat and attached it to the ONGC rig in the Bay of Bengal near the Kakinada coast.
