Krishna suffers extensive crop loss

Standing crop on about 9,400 hectares, including paddy on 5,267 hectares, has been badly affected across Krishna district due to cyclone Phethai that hit the Kakinada coast on Monday.


District Agriculture Department Joint Director T. Mohana Rao told The Hindu that ground-level staff had been deployed for enumeration of crop loss.


Maize crop on 2,000 hectares, tobacco on 276 hectares and cotton on 270 hectares and groundnut on 135 hectares have been damaged, according to information received till date. Horticulture Department Assistant Director B. Dayakar Babu, quoting preliminary reports, said horticulture crops, including banana, have been damaged on more than 1, 500 hectares.


District B. Lakshmikantam on Tuesday said that crop loss would be enumerated in three stages and compensation disbursed by December 20 (Thursday).


“The crop that faces inundation problem for 72 hours will be considered for compensation as per disaster management guidelines,” said Mr. Lakshmikantam.


Nuzvid Sub Collector Swapnil Dinakar is monitoring the crop enumeration exercise in the listed 150 villages across the district.
